Free State ID Card

You can get a free state ID card at your local Division of Motor Vehicles office.
You will need to bring in original documents that satisfy the following categories:
  • Proof of name and date of birth
  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of citizenship or legal status
  • Proof of Wisconsin residency

If you do not have a copy of your birth certificate, the Wisconsin DMV has a
new process for people who need to get an ID.
A combination of your birth certificate, Social Security card and utility or cell phone bill will be just fine, if available to you.

Do not worry, if you do not have a copy of your birth certificate, you are still able to get a free state ID card!

When filling out your application, check the box that says "ID for Free". Once completed, hold on to your receipt. Valid for 45 days, you can use this receipt at the polls until your free state ID arrives by mail.
